Philosophy
Transit Designs Philosophy:
Crisp clean lines and simple elegant forms incorporating innovative construction techniques and precise structural elements form the basis for each piece.
The underlying structure is inherent to the design of all Transit pieces. It is the intent that the space described by the assembled structural elements transform each piece into a three dimensional spatial composition. The negative space described by each piece is a considered part of each design.
The extensive use of glass in our Surfaces collection intentionally showcases the sculptural and structural intent and reveals the taut angular elements that impart visual tension and "edginess" to the pieces.
Frivolous decorative elements are omitted, replaced instead with considered repetitive forms and elements creating a natural rhythm or cadence, which acts as a counterpoint to the inherent tension in the designs, and imbues each design with a level of humanity.
Honesty and integrity in the use of materials is also a signature Transit Designs element. Solid hardwoods form the core of the structural elements, followed by laminations of solid hardwood elements and veneered sheet goods where necessary.
Many furniture manufacturers use only wood free from knots and other "flaws" cutting out and discarding a large portion of material. Transit sees these as natural features of the wood, only trimming out severe or structure compromising sections. Even these trimmed pieces are not wasted, being used in our smaller products and accessories.
